Audiobooks

Audiobooks are a very good way to learn a foreign language. Choose a favorite author, a favorite title and start listening wherever you are:preferably in bed, comfortably late at night, listening completely at your leasure. Take a subject you're familiar with, or, take a novel, story you already read in your native language. This really is a great way to improve both your listening skills, pronunciation and vocabulary!

eBooks

Don't confuse audiobooks with eBooks, electronic books. Many years ago the Gutenberg project introduced this concept: free books, newspapers and other publications to be downloaded and read on your computer.
They're still there. The Gutenberg-project and by now many others are offering thousands of publication; not only for the PC but for all kinds of e-reader hardware, including of course the ever so popular iPod's and iPhones.
A good freeware program to read eBooks is LexCycle Stanza. This software supports the eBook formats
epub, MS LIT, Amazon Kindle, Mobipocket, and PalmDoc, as well as general document formats HTML, PDF, MS Word, and Rich Text Format. The company Lexcycle is owned by Amazon.com (manufacturer/creator of the Amazon Kindle).

Stanza comes in two forms: Stanza iPhone/iPod, and Stanza Desktop.

Another good product, called eReader Pro, available for all platforms and all different handhelds can be downloaded for free as well.

And, not to forget, to do all the things mentioned above and more...than Calibre might be an option. Though a bit more complex I do prefer Calibre since it allows me to:

  • manage my library
  • convert to and from any format
  • to sync all e-book reader devices
  • to download news from the web and converting it into e-book form
  • to use as a Comprehensive e-book viewer
  • use it as a content server for online access to my book collection
If you want to use your ebook-reader software to study, then please hurry and try to download the -still- free Nookstudy reader from Barnes&Noble. It's a fine piece of software allowing you to comfortably read your books, studymaterial and having lots of options to annotate, put markups and do lookups (YouTube, Wikipedia, Google, Wolfram, Dictionary.com) without leaving the page. It's really a tool tailored for students -of all ages!
