Caption: Harlingen [prov.of Friesland] Harlingen harbour. This is the Nieuwe Willemshaven (haven=harbour) from 1877. Since 1287 Harlingen has been open to the sea as a resutl ot the Great Flood.First trade was aimed at Hamburg, Denmark and other Baltic regions,yet Harlingen never became member of the Hanseatic League. The 14th- and 15th century were the Golden Age of Harlingen and the transfer from the Frisian Admiralty from the town of Dokkum to Harlingen was another major event.
